Robert E. Mastandrea originally founded Miami-Luken, Inc. as the Miami Valley Drug Company in Dayton, Ohio on September 17, 1962. By the end of the first two weeks of business the company had done a grand total of $506 in sales. Miami-Luken will now do as much in sales every minute of every working day as it did in that first two weeks 40 years ago.
1971 The first major expansion occurred with the acquisition of the 100 year old A.G. Luken Drug Company in Richmond, Indiana. The acquisition doubled the product lines to over 18,000 items, and marked our entrance into the state of Indiana.
1973 To better define the company identity, a decision was made to establish one name for all warehouse locations. Taking the “Miami” from Miami Valley Drug Company, and the “Luken” from the A.G. Luken Drug Company, the present name Miami-Luken, Inc. evolved.
1975 A decision was made to capitalize on a thriving market in Indianapolis and build a full-line warehouse there. In less than five months a computerized warehouse was designed, built, stocked, and a staff of people hired and trained.
1985 Miami-Luken acquired the Kanawha Drug Company of Charleston, West Virginia. The 85 year old firm was relocated into a modernized warehouse facility in November of 1985.
1988 A home health care division was started in an effort to broaden the base of business. Products offered include wheelchairs, hospital beds, ambulatory aids, and oxygen equipment.
1990 Miami-Luken acquired the Hale Justis Wholesale Drug Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, furthering market penetration and increasing sales by 30 percent.
1991 Miami-Luken, Inc. completed the construction of a new 60,000 square foot warehouse and corporate headquarters facility in Springboro, Ohio. All other warehouses were eventually closed and the business transferred to the new facility. Shipping depots were established to facilitate daily delivery to each market.
1996 The Paramount Confection Company was acquired. This acquisition added a full line of candy, gum, mints, and seasonal items to our product offering.
1997 REM Corporation was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary for the purpose of acquiring retail pharmacies to combat the buy out of independent pharmacies by the large drug store chains. REM Corporation has expanded the chain of retail pharmacies to four locations.
2001 Miami-Luken, Inc. purchases the inventory and customer base of Indpendent Drug Company in Talmadge, Ohio. Thus beginning our servce to the Akron, Ohio area.
2002 Miami-Luken, Inc. purchases the inventory and customer base of The Becksmith Company located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Paramount Confection Company division was renamed Paramount-Becksmith Company.
